Dealer, Bank or Equipment Lender: Where Do Texarkana, AR Contractors Finance Excavators?

A Texarkana, AR contractor can finance an excavator or a work truck in three main places: the dealer's own finance program, a bank or credit union equipment loan, and an equipment finance company. Each reads the machine and the contractor differently, and the right one depends on the machine's age, the down payment and how soon the money is needed.

Construction Equipment Financing Companies: Dealers, Banks and Equipment Lenders Compared

Dealer programs are arranged by the seller, often through the manufacturer's finance arm. They can carry promotional terms on new machines and close at the point of sale, but they cover only what that dealer sells, and promotional rates can come with a higher price or fewer discounts.

Banks and credit unions make equipment loans to contractors they know, usually with fuller paperwork: tax returns, financial statements and sometimes a larger down payment. They may also want the contractor's operating accounts. Equipment finance companies specialize in machines, will often finance used and auction units, and lean on the equipment's value, but their pricing can be higher for newer or smaller firms.

When a Term Loan or Credit Line Beats Dealer Financing on an Excavator

An excavator bought to start a new line of work, such as site prep or utility trenching, is a machine purchase and fits equipment financing. A buyout of another contractor's fleet, with trucks, trailers and the customer list, fits a term loan, because part of the price is for things that are not machines.

A line of credit rarely fits a machine. It fits the costs around the machine: fuel, transport, operator wages and repairs while the first jobs are being billed. Using a line to buy the excavator ties up the limit for years.

An Invented Mini Excavator Deal, Priced Three Ways

Illustration only, invented figures: a contractor prices a $68,000 used mini excavator three ways. Every rate, down payment and term below is invented; all results are our arithmetic.

SourceDown paymentInvented annual rateMonthsMonthly paymentTotal paid incl. down
Dealer program$6,8007.9%60$1,238$81,079
Bank equipment loan$13,6008.5%48$1,341$77,962
Equipment finance company$6,80011.5%48$1,597$83,439

In this invented case, the dealer program carries the smallest invented rate but the longest term; the bank asks for more down; the equipment finance company costs the most in total. Change the numbers and the order can change. Compare totals, not payments alone, and ask each source about fees at signing.

Paperwork Construction Equipment Financing Companies Ask a Contractor For

  • The dealer quote or auction listing, with serial number, year and hours.
  • Bank statements for the contracting business and its most recent filed return.
  • A list of equipment the contractor already finances, with payments.
  • Contracts or bids the machine will work on.
  • Proof of insurance, or a quote for insuring the machine.

Used machines may need photos or an inspection, and auction purchases can need payment within days. Ask about timing before bidding.

Trucks, Trailers and Attachments Around the Machine

An excavator rarely works alone. It needs a trailer rated for its weight, a truck that can pull the trailer, and attachments such as buckets, thumbs, augers or breakers. Some sources finance the package as one agreement; others finance the machine and leave the trailer and truck to separate loans. Ask before signing which items the agreement covers, because a missing trailer can leave a new machine parked.

Attachments bought later can sometimes be added to the existing agreement. Ask whether that resets the term or starts a new one.

A Contractor's Checklist Before Signing an Equipment Contract

  • Compare the total paid, including the down payment and fees, across at least two sources.
  • Check the term against how long you expect to run the machine.
  • Read the default, insurance and prepayment sections.
  • Confirm who holds the title and when the lien is released.
  • Make sure the payment fits a slow month, not only a busy one.
